This activity I just did today! It was a test run and it was a PERFECT SUCCESS! We will definitely do it again! SO fun and interesting. I attached below the power point! Feel free to steal away! I took a lot of time so I might as well share it!


We started out by talking about famous American Criminals. They tried to recognize them by a picture. Then we revealed the answer and told different facts about each one and had them talk about what they knew about them. All of them were in their era.

The second portion of the ppt is the criminal sketch activity. We pass out paper and pencils to those that want to do their own sketch. We take one resident out of the room. We show the first mugshot to the group. Say a situation like, "You are at the ATM and someone tries to steal your wallet. You see him for 10 seconds..." You show him for 10 seconds and tell them to study each feature as quick and detailed as possible. After the ten seconds hide the screen and have everyone draw. Have a white board for a group to draw it together. Go to the mug shot screen and bring back the resident. Have them look at the criminal sketches and figure out which one it is!

This activity was something we had to do last minute! (You know how those happen. Especially when people cancel the day of! Oh the joy of it all!) It worked so well! Here is what you will need:

 

• Pictures of Diff. Bird Species
• State Bird List
• Sports Team Bird Logos
• Binoculars
• Smart Phone
• Microphone
• Marker
• Tape

This was a fun quiz. You could also just google some pictures

 

 

We first introduced different species of birds by showing the picture and having them guess what it is called. Then we told different facts about them. We wrote there names below their picture and taped them onto the wall. After doing about 15 of them, we talked and showed different sports team bird logos. Either having them guess the name or what sport they played. We touched a few different state birds and saw if they knew some. Make sure they know the state bird of where they live or where they are from!

 

Next we went back to the taped birds on the wall. By you-tubing a certain bird on the walls call. We used the microphone to amplify the sounds and had them guess what bird was making that sound! They had SO much fun! We will definitely use this again!

 

If the weather is good have residents look for birds out the windows with binoculars!

 

I also use this activity with my dementia residents. I will show them two different birds and them recognize the birds. Then play one bird call and have them guess between the two which it fits with.

• Orange and Yellow Paper
• Glue
• Googly Eyes
• Yarn
• Hole Punch
• Pencil

 

 

This was a darling activity some volunteers suggested to me! We did it in our dementia wing and it was a hit! We traced their hands twice on a yellow and orange paper folded. That way when we cut it out there was 4 hands for wings. We cut out hats, beak, and feet. (It definitely helps if you have a thick master cut out already to trace) You can even have all the pieces cut out already! Hole punch the top and attach everything with the googly eyes and have fun! :) Hang them up and make them fly!

Community Outings

Community Outings (Shopping Trips & Other Ideas)

At my work place about 90% of my residents are in wheelchairs, while a very small portion are not. Most of our activities are focused around easy accessibility and easy functioning, but you cannot forget the ones who are more cognitive and mobile. 

Every Tuesday we go on a weekly bus ride. We usually don't get out because of the time it takes to transfer everyone, and especially when we don't have enough volunteers to help push. (I am sure you all know how it goes) But every blue moon we will take our more mobile residents and go do something and get out.

 A few weeks ago we went to Walmart. A few of them had their own money, while the others I took around and they helped me get my own real groceries. 

One resident pushed the cart, and another held the list, while a few others hunted for items. At first I felt a little guilty for having them help me and shopping on the job. But they were SO pleased to help me and tell me good recipes they have made or their shopping tips. Most of them really missed these sort of activities. They even asked to go again! All the while I got my shopping done! They were really excited to help. Try it! Let me know what you think and what your experiences are!

Here are a few ideas of community outings:

• Feeding the ducks
• Fishing
• Finding out about easy volunteering in your area
• Ice cream trip
• Art Gallery
• Flea Markets 
• Events
• Walmart or other shopping stores (dollar store is always a fav)
• Go to lunch! (with proper work funding of course!)
• Picnic
• Playing at a park (kites, soccer, etc...)
• Get a tour 
• Museum
• Long pretty drive to the nearest lake
• Geocaching
• Watch sports teams practice or even a real game
• Library
• Art Class
• Wii Bowling Tournament at another Facility
• Go to one of the resident's home town and have them show you around

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!

Don't let their age, cognition, and mobility tie you down! :) :) Get them of their rooms!
